The best beaches near Sintra, from north to south

Azenhas do Mar, a white village on a cliff above the ocean near Sintra
In shortThe best beaches near Sintra are Praia Grande (surf and dinosaur footprints), Praia da Adraga (cliffs and sea caves), Praia da Ursa (wild and remote, near Cabo da Roca), Praia das Maçãs (family beach, reachable by the vintage Sintra tram), Azenhas do Mar (a cliff village with an ocean pool) and Magoito. All are on the Atlantic, in the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, between 20 and 30 minutes from Sintra town. Almoçageme sits in the middle of this coast.

The Sintra coast runs from Magoito in the north to Cabo da Roca in the south. It is wilder and less built-up than the Cascais coast, with high cliffs, Atlantic waves and small villages above the sand. Our house in Almoçageme sits right in the middle, so every beach below is within a short drive, and two are within walking distance.

Praia Grande

The largest beach on the Sintra coast and the main surf spot. Dinosaur footprints on the southern cliff, cafés behind the sand, lifeguards in summer. About a 15-minute walk from the villa. Read our Praia Grande guide.

Best for: surfing, families, long walks.

Praia Pequena

A small cove at the northern end of Praia Grande, separated from it by rocks. Quieter, and at low tide you can walk between the two.

Best for: a calmer spot close to Praia Grande.

Praia da Adraga

Often described as one of the most beautiful beaches in Portugal. It sits in a narrow valley below Almoçageme, framed by cliffs, rock arches and sea caves you can explore at low tide. There is a long-standing seafood restaurant right on the sand. New boardwalks are being built on the clifftops between Adraga and Praia Grande (see our guide).

Best for: scenery, lunch by the sea, photography.

Praia da Ursa

Below Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of mainland Europe. A wild beach with huge rock stacks, reached only by a steep, rough path. There are no facilities and no lifeguards. Spectacular, but only for people who are steady on their feet.

Best for: adventurous walkers and photographers.

Praia das Maçãs

A classic family beach with restaurants and a promenade. In spring and summer you can arrive on the vintage Sintra tram, which has run from Sintra to the coast since 1904.

Best for: families with small children, the tram ride.

Azenhas do Mar

One of the most photographed villages in Portugal: white houses stacked on a cliff above a small beach and a natural ocean pool that fills at high tide. The beach itself is small, so go for the view, a swim in the pool when the sea allows, and a seafood lunch.

Best for: sunset, photos, seafood.

Magoito

Further north, a wide beach below high cliffs, popular with locals and surfers, with fewer tourists than the beaches to the south.

Best for: escaping the crowds.

Practical tips for Sintra beaches

  • The Atlantic is cold all year. Most people find it refreshing rather than warm, even in August.
  • Swim only at beaches and times with lifeguards, and respect the flags. Currents can be strong.
  • Fog can roll in on summer mornings and often clears by midday.
  • Parking is tight at the smaller beaches in high season. Go early, or stay within walking distance.
